  • Description

Surrounded by his soldiers, King Hussein struggled through happy crowds November 12 shouting their loyalty to him after his safe return to Amman the previous day.

Cheering crowds and military bands marched through the streets in celebrations. Religious heads were at the palace and outside a camel was sacrificed as a thanks offering for the King's safe return.

After the initial excitement was over, investigations in both Syria and Jordan were reported showing that the flight of Hussein's plane over Syria was undertaken without clearance as required by international aviation regulations.

Jordanian sources were saying the King's flight - for a holiday in Europe - was understood to have received official clearance over Syria but apparently due to administrative errors on both sides, clearance in fact was not arranged in time. The King had made the flight in good faith, however.
