  • Description

MR. CHOU EN-LAI IS IN TANZANIA ON A FOUR-DAY VISIT. HE IS EXPECTED TO TOUR SEVERAL AFRICAN COUNTRIES BEFORE GOING ON TO THE AFRO-ASIAN CONFERENCE IN ALGIERS LATER THIS MONTH (JUNE 29).

THE VISIT IS MR. CHOU'S THIRD TO AFRICA. EARLY IN 1964 HE MADE A LONG TOUR OF TEN COUNTRIES. A VISIT AT THE TIME TO TANZANIA, FORMERLY TANGANYIKA, WAS POSTPONED AFTER THE ARMY MUTINIED.

IN DAR-ES-SALAAM SINCE EARLY MORNING, TANZANIANS WERE OUT TO GREET THE PRIME MINISTER. THEY WERE MASSED ALONG THE CEREMONIAL DRIVE FROM THE AIRPORT TO THE CITY WHERE OFFICIALS WITH LOUDHAILERS RALLIED THEM IN CHEERING. THOUSANDS WERE AT THE AIRPORT TOO, AND WHILE WAITING FOR MR. CHOU'S ARRIVAL, THEY DANCED IN THE HOT SUN TO THROBBING DRUMS.

MR. CHOU FLEW IN FROM PAKISTAN IN A RUSSIAN-BUILT ILYUSHIN. A GARLAND OF FLOWERS WAS PUT ABOUT HIS NECK AND HE RECEIVED A 19-GUN SALUTE. TOMORROW, THERE WILL BE ANOTHER WELCOME FOR HIM IN ZANZIBAR.

(CHINA IS GIVING TANZANIA CASH AND GOODS WORTH 3-MILLION DOLLARS, UNDER LAST YEAR'S AID AGREEMENT. OTHER CHINESE AID INCLUDES A GBP10-MILLION INTEREST-FREE LOAN TO TANZANIA AND GBP5-MILLION IN AID TO ZANZIBAR.)
