    Youthful Senator John F. Kennedy, a Catholic, was swept to victory in the Democratic National Conventional in los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena, July 13, as Presidential candidate. he took 806 votes against his nearest rival, Texan Lyndon B.Johnson, with 409.

    The youngest candidate in half-a-century, Kennedy appealed for party unity - although the southern states votes unanimously against him because of his avowed support for the strong Democratic manifesto on Civil Rights.

    Kennedy praised his opponents and said: "We shall carry the fight to the people in the fall and we shall win."
    Defeated Johnson immediately pledged his support for Kennedy in the coming campaign, shortly afterwards became vice-presidential candidate.
