  • Description

Five people were killed and some 80 injured on the night of March 30 when an electric express train from Turin to Rome caught fire in Marmi Selici Tunnel, near Bonassola, on the Italian Riviera. Film taken of the crash early next day shows that most of the carriages were destroyed.

Technicians worked all through the night to bring the carriages into the open. Traffic on the line was restarted at 1045 a.m.

A passenger had pulled the communication alarm when the fire started in one of the coaches - the train stopped 300 yards from the end of the tunnel. As the driver attempted to start it again the engine was set on fire by a short circuit.

The passengers hurriedly climbed out of the train and out of the tunnel but many were checked by fumes and, when rescuers arrived, five people had died.
