BACKGROUND: Naval strategy requires control of the seas, strategic deterrence, and the projection of forces ashore. The amphibious operation is the only available means for the projection of an extensive combat power onto a hostile shore. The ability of an amphibious force to land from the sea onto a coastal area anywhere at any time provides a flexibility which favours the attacker and enhances the credibility of the NATO alliance to regain the territory of its members.. Northern wedding 78 Phase II exercises this capability in the Shetland Islands using the mythical country of "Normark", representing southern Norway, as the objective.
Northern Wedding 78 Phase II is a realistic situation which calls for the assistance of forces from participating nations in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to conduct operations to regain control of an ally's territory. It is designed to exercise the planning and conduct of combined amphibious operations for realistic training among allied forces.
The 4th Marine Amphibious Brigade has rendezvoused at sea with the 40 Commando Brigade of the United Kingdom Royal Marines, and the combat, combat support, and combat service support units of both nations have been expeditiously linked under an allied staff and the Commander, Combined Landing Force.
Approximately 40,000 men, 170 ships and submarines, and 800 aircraft and helicopters from eight countries -- Belgium, Canada, Denmark, the Federal Republic of Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United States -- are participating.
