  • Description

The great Alpine rescue has been called off, leaving for dead three of the original party of four who were trapped on the north wall of the fearsome Eiger Peak.

"No more lives will be risked on the North Wall to bring down dead men", said the rescue chief, Peter Frei. And he added the warning:
"Reckless climbers who risk their lives on the North Wall in future should not expect help when they get into difficulties".

The only survivor, Claudio Corti, of Italy, arrived at the Eiger glacier funicular station on a stretcher on Monday, August 12, on his way to Interlaken Hospital.

He smiled faintly and told an Italian reporter; "It was folly to attempt through North Wall. We did not appear to have the experience".

Observation of the other Italian trapped on the wall, Stefano Longhi, leaves no doubt that he died of exposure and exhaustion during Sundau night, after Corti's rescue.

The two German members of the group, Guenther Nothdurft, and Goetz Meier, apparently left the ledge they shared with Corti in a desperate attempt to make their own way to the top.

    All trace has been lost.

When our cameraman checked in at Kleine Scheidegg shortly before rescue operations were called off, he found in international team of alpinists preparing to scale the peak.

They included parties of climbers from Italy, Germany and Poland.

Filming the "Spider" - a great pattern of rocks on the North Wall of the peak, he picked out the area where the Italian and German climbers had their camp when they found that they could go no further.

Directed by radio walkie-talkie from the ground, one party made for the summit while another went to a rest hut on the other side of the peak - neither found any sign of the missing German climbers.

Then, when another blizzard closed round the mountain, rescue operations were called off for good.
