  • Description

Well-known entertainer Frank Sinatra appeared before a House of Representatives Select Committee on Crime in Washington on Tuesday (July 18) to answer allegations linking him with underworld gambling interests.

During the 90-minute hearing, Sinatra claimed that he was the victim of character assassination by a previous witness, Joseph (the Baron) Barboza. He vehemently denied allegations by Barboza that he had been a 'front man' for underworld money in hotels at Miami Beach and Las Vegas. He also denied any link with alleged gangster interests in a New England race-track in which sinatra had invested 55 thousand dollars (US) -- GBP22 thousand sterling -- for a few months in 1962.

Sinatra appeared at the congressional committee hearing as a voluntary witness after he had ignored a subpoena to attend a hearing last month. The committee is investigating alleged Mafis gambling activities.
