  • Description

MORE THAN TWO-THOUSAND MUSLIMS HAVE TAKEN PART IN A DEMONSTRATION OUTSIDE THE WEST BENGAL STATE ASSEMBLY IN PROTEST AT THE WORKS OF A MUSLIM AUTHOR, SHAMA NAYAZI. THE MUSLIMS CLAIMED THE BOOKS WERE ANTI-ISLAM AND SHOULD BE BANNED.

A DEPUTATION OF MUSLIMS CALLED ON THE WEST BENGAL CHIEF MINISTER TO BAN THE AUTHOR'S WORKS.

IN THE MARCH ON THE STATE ASSEMBLY YESTERDAY (MONDAY), POLICE STOOD BY TO PREVENT VIOLENCE. THE CROWD, CARRYING FLAGS, PLACARDS AND BANNERS, SAT DOWN ON THE ROAD IN FRONT OF THE ASSEMBLY GATES AND REFUSED TO MOVE FOR SEVERAL HOURS.

THE CROWD WAS ADDRESSED BY A MUSLIM MINISTER, WHO FINALLY PERSUADED THE DEMONSTRATORS TO ABANDON A HUNGER STRIKE PROGRAMME WHICH THEY HAD PLANNED.

SIMILAR DEMONSTRATIONS LAST JANUARY ENDED IN RIOTS WHEN CROWDS BECAME DISSATISFIED WITH THE DECISION OF THE ADMINISTRATION OVER ANOTHER AUTHOR'S WORK.
