Background: SAIGON THIS WEEK PAID TRIBUTE TO MAJOR BUI NGUYEN NGAI - A SENIOR OFFICER KILLED IN THE MILITARY COUP THAT OVERTHREW THE DIEM REGIME. THOUSANDS OF MOURNERS, INCLUDING BUDDHIST MONKS AND TROOPS, MARCHED IN A BIG FUNERAL PROCESSION THROUGH THE VIETNAMESE CAPITAL ON TUESDAY.

MAJOR NGAI WAS KILLED IN A TANK WHILE SPEAR-HEADING THE FINAL ASSAULT ON THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE AT THE HEIGHT OF LAST WEEK'S COUP.

FROM THE FUNERAL, ATTENTION ON TUESDAY SWITCHED TO A ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH IN CHOLON, SAIGON'S SISTER CITY. IT WAS HERE THAT EX-PRESIDENT NGO DINH DIEM AND HIS BROTHER, NGO DINH NHU, WERE REPORTEDLY KILLED WHILE TAKING REFUGE DURING THE COUP.

THEIR BODIES WERE REMOVED TO A SAIGON HOSPITAL. BUT LATER THEY WERE REPORTED TO HAVE VANISHED. HEARING THAT THE BODIES HAD BEEN BURIED, RELATIVES AND CLOSE FRIENDS OF DIEM RUSHED TO A ROMAN CATHOLIC CEMETERY. THEY FOUND TWO FRESHLY-DUG GRAVES - BUT THEY WERE EMPTY.

LATER REPORTS SAID THE BODIES HAD BEEN QUIETLY BURIED IN A GOVERNMENT CEMETERY IN SAIGON.

MEANWHILE, SOUTH VIETNAM'S NEW MILITARY RULERS MADE THEIR FIRST OFFICIAL APPEARANCE BEFORE THE PUBLIC ON TUESDAY. LEADER OF THE COUP, MAJOR-GENERAL DUONG VAN MINH, AND THE NEW PRIME MINISTER, NGUYEN NGOC THO, INTRODUCED MEMBERS OF THE PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT AT A PRESS CONFERENCE.

AMONG THOSE WHO MET NEWSMEN: GENERAL TRAN VAN DON, NEW MINISTER OF DEFENCE, AND MAJOR-GENERAL DINH, SECURITY MINISTER MOST OF THE PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT ARE CIVILIANS, BUT GENERAL MINH, CHAIRMAN OF THE REVOLUTIONARY COUNCIL, IS REGARDED AS EFFECTIVE HEAD OF STATE, PENDING A NEW CONSTITUTION.

AT A MILITARY GARRISON IN SAIGON, GENERAL TRAN VAN DON, WHO IS ALSO ACTING CHIEF OF ARMED FORCES, HAD AN ENTHUSIASTIC PUBLIC WELCOME AT A REVIEW OF TROOPS - ALSO ON TUESDAY.

JUBILANT CROWDS BROKE THROUGH TROOP CORDONS TO CHAIR HIM ALOFT. LEADERS OF A YOUTH ORGANIZATION PRESENTED HIM WITH A SCHOOL FLAG. GENERAL DON THEN AWARDED DECORATIONS FOR VALOUR TO SEVERAL SOLDIERS WHO TOOK PART IN THE ARMY COUP.
