A mass demonstration was staged in Tel Aviv on wednesday (27 March) to cal for the release of Israel's prisoners of war held by Syria. The rally was orgenised by a committee of the prisoners' parents, and weeping relatives could be seen among the crowd.
The committee wants to step up world pressure on syria and to make the issue o the prisoners' return completely separate from disengagement talks between the two sides.
The demonstration was held in Syria Square, where photographs of the prisoners were on display. General Arik Sharon and the Chief Military Rabhi, Shlomo Goren were among the speakers.
Along the Golan Heights front between Syria and Israel, fighting has been continuing. On Thursday, (28 March) Israeli soldiers went into action early in the morning. Two of their soldiers were wounded by Syrian fire. Many of the Israelis have been at the front since the start of the October war. They have became accustomed to the tensions of war, and now take advantage of breaks in the firing to sun themselves and sip coffee.
