Background: The West German director, Wim Wenders, won the Cannes film festival's top prize, the Golden Palm, for "Paris, Texas". Famous names of the film world attended the award ceremony: among them actors Tony Curtis and Anthony Hopkins. Veteran US director John Huston had been expected to snatch the top award for his film 'Under the Volcano', but the crowd reacted enthusiastically when British actor Dirk Bogarde, who had chaired the jury, announced its decision. It fell to US film star Faye Dunaway to present the award to Wim Wenders. He thanked the jury for the greatest success a director can have in Europe. His US-made film, 'Paris, Texas', tells the story of a man who returns home after a long absence wandering in the Mexican desert, and his subsequent search for his estranged wife. The Cannes jury, however, paid special tribute to John Huston who has never won the Golden Palm. He won a special award for his "extraordinary contribution to the cinema". The audience gave the 77-year-old Huston a standing ovation when he received his tribute from French actress Isabelle Huppert. The best director award went to Bertrand Tavernier of France for "Un dimanche a la campagne" (A Sunday in the country). The best actor prize was shared by Spain's Alfredo Landa and Francisco Rabal for roles in "Los Santos innocentes" (The Holy innocents), and Britain's Helen Mirren won the best actress award for her part in "Cal".
