The European airbus made an hour-long maiden flight over France from Toulouse on Saturday (28 October ). The plane, being built at the works of the French aircraft manufacturers Aerospatiale, taxied up the runway for ten minutes before the incident-fire flight.
The airbus, A-3300-B, is being built with contributions from five countries - West Germany, Netherlands, Spain, France and Britain. Thirteen orders have been placed for the aircraft so far - six from Air France, four from the Spanish airline Iberia and three from Sterling of Denmark.
On Wednesday, the French government gave the go-ahead for full-scale production to begin. The aircraft is twin-engined and designed to carry 260 passengers over short-to-medium hauls.
