  • Description

THE "SEA PALACE", JAPAN'S FIRST SEA-GOING CATAMARAN, IS OW IN SERVICE AS A PASSENGER AND CAR FERRY. THE 430-TON VESSEL - BUILT BY NIPPON KOKAN - HAS AIR-CONDITIONED ACCOMMODATION FOR 287 PASSENGERS AND SPACE FOR 15 AUTOMOBILES.

THE CATAMARAN'S CIRCULAR DOME HOUSES AND OBSERVATION LOUNGE AND A BUFFET. ITS MAIN ENGINES ARE OF THE GEARED DIESEL TYPE, OPERATED BY REMOTE CONTROL FROM THE BRIDGE. THE SERVICE SPEED IS 14 KNOTS.

JAPAN HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN OVERCOMING THE VARIOUS ENGINEERING PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED IN BUILDING LARGE CATAMARAN SHIPS OF STEEL. THE MAIN DIFFICULTIES HAVE BEEN THE CONNECTING OF THE TWO HULLS AND THE ACHIEVEMENT OF SATISFACTORY SPEED AND MANOEUVRABILITY.

IN THE SUMMER OF 1965, NIPPON KOKAN WILL DELIVER THREE CATAMARANS TO THE BURMESE GOVERNMENT FOR USE ON THE COUNTRY'S RIVER TRANSPORT SYSTEM.

(THE CATAMARAN - WITH ITS TWO HULLS - IS WIDE, SHORTER AND SAID TO BE MORE STABLE THAN CONVENTIONAL SHIPS OF EQUAL Loading CAPACITY.1 THEY'RE CLAIMED TO NEED LESS TIME FOR ENTERING AND LEAVING PORT, AS STEERING IS EASIER AND TIGHTER TURNS ARE POSSIBLE. BY REVERSING ONE OF THE MAIN ENGINES, THE CATAMARAN CAN MAKE A ONE-POINT TURN.)
