    SCORES OF JOURNALISTS AND PHOTOGRAPHERS ASSEMBLED OUTSIDE THE JUROR'S ROOM FOR THE RESULT. THE 10-MAN JURY HAD REACHED A DEADLOCK IN THEIR DECISION, BUT THE VOTE OF THE JURY PRESIDENT WAS THE DECIDING FACTOR FOR MR. ARMAND LANOUX, 50, WHO WAS THE WINNER.

    MR. PHILIPE HERIAT, A MEMBER OF THE JURY, WHO MADE THE ANNOUNCEMENT, WAS MOBBED BY A HUGE CROWD INCLUDING JOURNALISTS WHEN HE EMERGED FROM THE ROOM.

    MR. LANOUX, A FATHER OF THREE CHILDREN, WAS AWARDED THE PRIZE FOR HIS NOVEL ENTITLED "WHEN THE SEA RECEDES".

    MR. LANOUX IS A JOURNALIST AND RADIO COMMENTATOR AND HIS BOOK HAS A THEME CONCERNING WAR AND PEACE AND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN A FRENCH MAN AND A FRENCH CANADIAN WITH THE SAME SURNAME.
