  • Description

Thai Prime Minster Kriangsak Chamanand opened on Wednesday (14 June) the 11th meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Foreign Minsters at the seaside resort hotel in Pattaya.

General Kriangsak, speaking at the formal opening attended by five member countries-Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines, said Thailand was heartened that bridges were being build by individual ASEAN countries to all regional countries, especially Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.

"It is important for ASEAN countries to promote intra-ASEAN trade and overall economic strength as well as to encourage economic ties and cooperation with countries outside the region," he said.

The Prime Minster said ASEAN had gained widespread recognition in the international community, with many countries seeking dialogue and cooperation with it.

"Some major powers have expressed outright support for ASEAN and its objectives," he added.

On Saturday (17 June), the day after the meeting ends, Japanese Foreign Minster Sunao Sonoda will meet the ASEAN ministers to confer the pledged low interest loans totalling one billion U.S. dollars to finance all five ASIAN projects.
