  • Description

HEAVILY ARMED AMERICAN SOLDIERS HAVE STEPPED UP PATROLS INSIDE THE DEMILITARIZED ZONE SOUTH OF THE KOREAN TRUCE LINE FOLLOWING THE AMBUSH SLAYING OF TWO AMERICAN SOLDIERS AND A CLASH IN WHICH FOUR NORTH KOREAN SOLDIERS DIED.

THE DEMILITARIZED ZONE IS TWO THOUSAND METERS ON EACH SIDE OF THE ARMISTICE LINE.OBSERVATION POSTS ON THE UNITED NATIONS SIDE ARE FULLY MANNED AND PATROLLING IS BEING CARRIED ON WITH TANKS, JEEPS AND HELICOPTERS, AS WELL AS ON FOOT.

A NEW OPERATION IS THE USE OF PATROL BOATS 24 HOURS A DAY ON THE IMJIN RIVER.THE BOATS ARE ARMED AND EQUIPPED WITH SEARCHLIGHTS.IT WAS BELOW THE IMJIN THAT AMERICAN SOLDIERS CAUGHT UP WITH THE NORTH KOREANS WHO HAD AMBUSHED THE AMERICAN PATROL.TWO NORTH KOREANS WERE KILLED IN THE FIGHT THAT FOLLOWED AND TWO OTHERS KILLED THEMSELVES.

INFILTRATORS THROUGH THE LINES SINCE THE ARMISTICE HAVE BEEN FAIRLY COMMON, HOWEVER, AND IT IS NOT KNOW WHETHER THE LAST TWO YEARS, TWO THOUSAND AGENTS WERE ARRESTED OR INVOLVED IN INCIDENTS.IN JULY ALONE, SOUTH KOREAN INTELLIGENCE SAYS IT ARRESTED 15 AND KILLED 9, IN ADDITION TO THE INCIDENT INVOLVING THE AMERICANS.

YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) GRENADES WERE USED IN A FURTHERS CLASH BETWEEN PATROLS OF BOTH SIDES.

THE INCIDENTS COME WITHIN A FORTNIGHT OF THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE TRUCE WHICH DIVIDED KOREA TEN YEARS AGO.SINCE THEN, SOUTH KOREA'S ARMY, FOURTH LARGEST IN THE WORLD, HAS BEEN RETRAINED AND EQUIPPED BY AMERICA.
