Territorials of the 3rd and 7th Battalions of the Royal Rhodesia Regiment used their new FN rifles for the first time, Feb 18, in Lusaka. The part time soldiers were called to duty, Feb 13, in case African violence over the London constitutional talks. All the men have already been trained in weapon drill during their national service.
With the FN rifle the fire-power of a company will be increased by one-third. The lightweight FN has already proved its worth in the armies of Europe.
While the soldiers trained with the new weapon Kenneth Kaunda's United National Independence Party staged a rally to protest over the death of former Congolese Premier Lumumba. The speakers asked their followers to remain quiet and refrain from violence. Several hinted at the trouble that might follow if no solution could be found to the crisis reached in the London talks.
Police were out in force in case of any trouble but apart from a few minor incidents the meeting went off quietly. No arrests were made.
