  • Description

An international professional boxing contest drew a crowd of 20,000 to Ivory Coast's Central Boxing Club in the capital, Abidjan, on 4 January. Two matches were of special interest.

The first, a welter-weight match, featured Salam Ouedraogo of Ivory Coast against the Argentinean Tony Ramos. The scheduled ten-round bout was brought to an abrupt close in the third round when Ouedraogo felled Ramos and was declared the winner by a knock-out.

But the main attraction of the evening was the match between Spain's super welter-weight champion, Epifiano Collado, and Ivory Coast's own champion, Sea Robinson. Again. the contest was to have run for ten rounds. and again it was brought to a sudden and by the powerful punching of the Ivory Coast boxer, this time, in the fifth round, when Robinson was declared the winner by a knock-out.

Boxing is popular in Ivory Coast -- at all levels. This match was attended by President Felix Houphouet-Boigny. The winners received prize money totalling 150,000 france CFA (271 pounds sterling, 623 U. S. dollars) and the losers 100,000 francs CFA (181 pounds sterling, 416 U. S. dollars).

SYNOPSIS: Ramos, at sixty-three killogrammes, was at a light weight disadvantage over his rival who weighed in at sixty-five killogrammes. But Ranos took the initiative from the first bell, constantly pressing the attack with flurries of blows.

But the fight was brought to an abrupt conclusion in the third round when Ouedraogo's powerful right hand felled Ramos -- to the unrestrained delight of the partisan crowd. The victory was to set the pattern for the night's big fights which were separated by short amateur bouts.

A popular win for Ouedraogo who collected prize money of a hundred and fifty thousands francs CFA.

The next big fight on the card was the highlight of the evening -- Spain's Super-Welterweight Champion Epifiano Collado varus Sea Robinson of the Ivory Coast. The early rounds started slowly. This, too, was scheduled as a ten-round fight. Both boxers were well-matched for weight; Collado weighed in at 71 killogrammes and Robinson at 70 killogrammes.

Both fighters gave the crowd a fine display. Collado -- a heavier puncher than Robinson -- likes to fight at close quarters. Collado is quicker and livelier boxer.
