  • Description

On the beaches round Sand Francisco, California, school children and students have been rescuing sea and shore birds badly affected by oil from two tankers which collided just outside the Golden Gate.

The black oil is threatening Bolinas Lagoon, a bird sanctuary for the rare blue heron and the egret. Birds are being rescued from the oil bound sand and mud and being taken to the Audubon Ranch which is near Bolinas.

Nearly two million gallons of black oil is believed to have been released into San Francisco Bay when the tankers Arizona Standard and Oregon Standard collided just outside the Golden Gate. The oil is thick bunker fuel. A Bolinas school teacher who helped to rescue the sea birds said "It's tar. You can't call it oil."
