Background: An unusual orphanage, set in 60 acres (24 hectares) of parkland in Sri Lanka, was officially opened last week -- for elephants only.

The babies -- ranging from two to 11 months -- will be trained to perform and it is hoped the orphanage will develop into a tourist attraction although the main purpose is to save the island's elephant population -- estimated at 1,500 -- from extinction.

The young elephants' parents were killed by farmers who caught them trampling on rice and rubber crops.

The park -- about 50 miles (80 km) from Colombo -- will be administered by the Wildlife Protection Society of Sri Lanka and the Department of Wildlife. It is hoped in the future that other sick and wounding animals -- such as deer -- may also be cared for there.
