King Faisal of Saudi Arabia promised he would personally work for closer co-operation with Mauritania. He made the promise during his four-day visit to the country, which began on Thursday 23 November.
A record crowd greeted the King of Nouakchott airport, where he was welcomed by the Head of State, Moktar Ould Daddah.
At a dinner both leaders stressed the historical links between their countries, and also called for an end to Israeli "expansionism" in the Middle East. King Faisal said Zionism was responsible for "all the agitation" in Asia, the Middle East and Africa. He also regretted that Spain, which he regarded as a traditional friend of Arab nations, continued its presence in the Spanish Sahara.

President Moktar Ould Daddah was at the airport to greet the visiting monarch. Later the two Heads of State each stressed the ancient ties between their countries, and King Faisal promised he'd work personally to ensure even closer co-operation in future.
The leaders were also united in their condemnation of Israel, King Faisal said that Zionism was responsible for agitation throughout Asia, Africa and the Middle East, He also regretted that Spain continued to stay in the Spanish Sahara.
The King was introduced to Mauritanian ministers before beginning his tour, which included visits to a carpet factory and a desalination project.
Crowds estimated at over fifty thousand lined the route to the Presidential Palace. King Faisal's programme also included a religious ceremony, and a dinner at which Mauritanian poets recited works in Arabic dedicated to the king.
