  • Description

West Berlin Mayor Brandt received a big official welcome on his arrival at Athens Airport Nov 11 for a four-day visit to Greece.

Giant Greek and German flags bedecked the airport, Deputy Premier Canelopoulos, Athens Mayor Tsoukalos, and German Ambassador Seelos greeted Herr Brandt while a Greek Army unit formed a guard of honour.

In a speech broadcast from the airport, Herr Brandt said he brought greetings from a "strongly sorely-tried city to a people who well knew what it meant to fight for freedom and independence."
Next day Nov 12, Herr Brandt paid tribute to Greek war dead at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Athens and later visited Premier Constantine Karamanlis.

Greek political circles gave special significance to Herr Brandt's visit to Athens, for the Government would have the opportunity to discuss the Max Merten accusations which shook the unity and authority of the Greek Government.

As probable future Chancellor of the Federal Republic. Brandt would also have important talks with Greek officials on the strengthening of the Greco-German relations.
