  • Description

VIOLENCE IN SOUTH KOREA AS STUDENTS CLASH WITH POLICE AND TROOPS. UGLY SCENES TOOK PLACE IN SEOUL ON WEDNESDAY AS AN ESTIMATED 10,000 STUDENTS DEMONSTRATED FOR THE RESIGNATION OF PRESIDENT CHUNG HEE PARK.

THEY WERE THE WORST DEMONSTRATIONS IN SOUTH KOREA SINCE 1960 WHEN VIOLENT PROTESTS LED TO THE DOWNFALL OF PRESIDENT SYNGMAN RHEE'S REGIME. AS THE OUTNUMBERED MILITIA WITHDREW IN THE FACE OF THE STUDENT MOBS, MARTIAL LAW WAS CLAMPED ON THE CAPITAL.

TARGET FOR THE STUDENTS WAS THE CAPITOL BUILDING, THE OFFICE OF PRESIDENT CHUNG HEE PARK. TROOPS ENCIRCLED THE BUILDING AS STUDENTS GATHERED ELSEWHERE IN THE CITY.

THEN THE DEMONSTRATION BEGAN, AS THE STUDENTS - BRINGING WITH THEM THEIR OWN BARRICADES - MARCHED ON BOTH THE CAPITOL BUILDING AND THE CITY HALL.

POLICE REACTED QUICKLY WITH TEAR-GAS, USING A NEW ANTI-RIOT VEHICLE ARMED WITH AN AIRCRAFT PROPELLER TO FAN THE SMOKY FUMES TOWARDS THE DEMONSTRATORS.

IN OTHER PARTS OF SEOUL, STUDENTS ATTACKED POLICE STATIONS WHICH POLICE HAD SEALED OFF WITH A ROW OF ARMY TRUCKS.

THE DEMONSTRATORS THREW STONES AT THE HEAVILY-OUTNUMBERED POLICE AND TROOPS, WHO WERE FORCED TO WITHDRAW - WITH THE STUDENTS CHASING THEM.

(FURTHER VIOLENT DEMONSTRATIONS TOOK PLACE THE FOLLOWING DAY - EVEN SPREADING TO TOKYO - AND MARTIAL LAW WAS EXTENDED TO OTHER TOWNS.)
