The 79th birthday of His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie of Ethiopia was marked in ceremonies throughout the nation on Friday. A 21-gun Salute at dawn heralded a day of festivities amongst both the ordinary citizens of the country and its leading churchmen, dignitaries and military chiefs.
A particularly moving part of the day's festivities was the singing of a special song for the Emperor by a children's choir of the three armed forces -- many of whose father's died in action.
SYNOPSIS: His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie of Ethiopia celebrated his 79th birthday on Friday. The day began with a 21-gun salute, after which His Majesty attended a thanksgiving service. Then began the celebrations attended by those close to the throne.
The choir was that of children, many of whose fathers died while on active service with the three armed services. After the vocal tribute many of the children presented the Emperor with gifts of flowers.
A woman in Ethiopian national costume also made a presentation of flowers and handed the Emperor some of the thousands of greetings telegrams which had come for him
His Majesty posed with members of the Royal Family on a day of celebration for a monarch who has dedicated himself to transforming his country from an agrarian place Into the modern state it is today.
