Background: The Israeli Prime Minister Mrs Golda Meir received the honorary degree of Doctor of Philosophy from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem on Monday (July 6).
The ceremony opened with all rising to honour the memory of those who gave their lives so that the Hebrew University could return to its location on Mount Scopus after 20 years.
A packed amphitheatre listened to Mr. Abraham Harman, President of the Hebrew University, deliver the opening address after which students of the University were awarded their degrees.
The citation for Mrs Meir said the her life has been dedicated to the liberation of the Jewish people and of mankind. It also mentioned her outstanding qualities of leadership and organisation and listed the political offices she has held.
Mrs Meir delivered a shot speech in acceptance of her degree in which she called for unity of the people at a time "when we are engaged in the hardest and most serious struggle we have ever known". She said she hoped that in spite of difficult days Israel would see the day when it would walk towards its neighbours offering peace and progress.
