  • Description

ALGIERS, AND ALGERIA, ARE NOW SHOWING FEW SIGNS OF THE ATTEMPTED COUP LAST THURSDAY. THE COUNTRY IS APPARENTLY COMPLETELY UNDER THE CONTROL OF THE PRESIDENT, HOUARI BOUMEDIENNE.

LAST THURSDAY'S ATTEMPTED COUP BY SOME OF ALGERIA'S ARMY UNITS WAS STOPPED 24 HOURS AFTER IT BEGAN. LOYAL TROOPS STOPPED REBELS FROM MOVING INTO ALGIERS, AT A SMALL BRIDGE ABOUT 46 MILES (74 KMS) FROM THE CAPITAL, AND THE REVOLT WAS OVER.

THERE IS STILL NO OFFICIAL NEWS ON THE WHEREABOUTS OF COLONEL TAKAR ZBIRI, ALLEGED LEADER OF THE REVOLT COLONEL ZBIRI WAS ALGERIAN CHIEF OF STAFF. THE ALGERIAN GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCED YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) THAT THE LAST 'MISLED SOLDIERS' HAD SURRENDERED AND RETURNED TO THEIR BARRACKS.

NO OFFICIAL REPORT HAS BEEN GIVEN ON THE NUMBER OF DEAD AND WOUNDED, EXCEPT THE ANNOUNCEMENT THAT THERE HAVE BEEN 'NUMEROUS CASUALTIES'. THE COUP IS THE FIRST MAJOR CRISIS WITHIN THE COUNTRY, SINCE COLONEL BOUMEDIENNE BECAME PRESIDENT IN JUNE 1965.
