    THE EIGHT GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE UNION OF AFRICAN BROADCASTING AND TELEVISION SERVICES (URTNA) OPENED IN FORT LAMY ON WEDNESDAY (8 NOV)
    DELEGATION FROM 16 AFRICAN COUNTRIES ARE ATTENDING THE MEETING. ALSO PRESENT ARE REPRESENTATIVES OF THE FRENCH RADIO AND TELEVISION ORGANISATION, AN ASSOCIATE URTNA MEMBER, AND OBSERVERS FROM THE EUROPEAN BROADCASTING UNION, THE INTERNATIONAL TELEVISION ORGANISATION AND THE UNITED NATIONS EDUCATIONAL SCIENTIFIC AND CULTURAL ORGANISATION (UNESCO).

    M. RAHAMA SALE, CHAD'S ACTING MINISTER OF INFORMATION AND TOURISM, WELCOMING THE DELEGATES STRESSED THE IMPORTANCE OF RADIO AND TELEVISION AS MODERN MEANS WHICH COULD BE USED TO AID ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND SOCIAL ADVANCE.

    THEY COULD HELP IN THE "FIGHT AGAINST IGNORANCE WHICH IS GREAT OBSTACLE TO OUR ENTRY INTO THE WORLD OF MODERN TECHNOLOGY", HE SAID.

    M. REZZOUG, PRESIDENT OF URTNA AND DIRECTOR OF ALGIERS RADIO, SAID THAT ONE OF THE UNION'S ESSENTIAL TASKS WAS TO ESTABLISH LINKS BETWEEN RADIO AND TELEVISION SERVICES OF THE MEMBER-STATES.
