  • Description

At a meeting of the United Nations Security council on Wednesday (6 June), convened at Egypt's request to review the Middle East situation, Egypt again demanded the withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied Arab lands.

Israel countered with another appeal for a negotiated settlement of the conflict.

The Egyptian Foreign Minister, Mohammed Hassan El-Zayyat, the first speaker, asked the council to request an immediate and unconditional withdrawal of all Israeli forces the lines existing before the 1967 war. The Israeli Ambassador, Yosef Tekoah, replied that Israel would under no circumstances give up the right to establish a secure boundary of peace.

This is the first full review of the Arab Israeli conflict that the Security Council has undertaken since 1967, when they created the Jarring peace mission and asked for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from territory they had occupied in Egypt, Jordan and Syria.
