    MR NEHRU, THE PRIME MINISTER OF INDIA DIED THIS MORNING (WEDNESDAY) AFTER A HEART ATTACK. IN LONDON THE NEWS SPREAD QUICKLY AND CROWDS, CHIEFLY INDIANS LIVING IN THE CITY, CONVERGED ON THE INDIAN EMBASSY.

    THE INDIAN HIGH COMMISSIONER IN BRITAIN, SEVENTY-SIX YEAR OLD JIVE RAJMEHTA, A CLOSE FRIEND OF MR. NEHRU, CONDUCTED A SHORT SERVICE AT THE EMBASSY IN MEMORY OF THE INDIAN PREMIER. MANY INDIANS IN THE CROWD WEPT OPENLY AS THE HIGH COMMISSIONER PAYED TRIBUTE TO THE DEAD LEADER.

    THE NEWS OF MR. NEHRU'S DEATH WAS HEARD FIRST ON MORNING NEWS BULLETINS BUT EARLY AFTERNOON EDITIONS OF THE LONDON EVENING NEWSPAPERS CARRIED THE NEWS IN LARGE BLACK TYPE. THE INDIAN FLAG HAS BEEN FLYING AT HALF-MAST OUTSIDE THE EMBASSY SINCE SOON AFTER NINE O'CLOCK WHEN THE NEWS REACHED BRITAIN.

    WHILE THE INDIAN COMMUNITY GATHERED AT THE EMBASSY IN TOUCHING TRIBUTE TO THEIR DEAD PREMIER, BRITAIN'S PRIME MINISTER, SIR ALEC DOUGLAS-HOME PREPARED TO LEAVE AT ONCE FOR NEW DELHI TO ATTEND THE FUNERAL. IN A TRIBUTE SIR ALEC CALLED MR. NEHRU "A MAN OF MAGNANIMITY, OF GREAT BREADTH OF MIND AND VISION." A PAST BRITISH PRIME MINISTER, EARL ATLEE SAID HE WAS A MAN "SINGULARLY FREE OF BITTERNESS".
