  • Description

"Sea Legs", a 5-ton experimental hydrofoil craft, developed by Gibbs & Cox, Inc., New York, is currently undergoing tests by the Navy's Bureau of Ships off Staten Island.

Fitted with two fully submerged foils, one forward and one aft, the craft reaches speeds in excess of 25 miles per hour. A high performance autopilot controls the position of the boat and the foils. The control system includes a height sensing device, integrating gyros, accelerometers, servo-mechanisms and electronic units. The primary purpose of the boat is to test the control and foil system. It is claimed that a hydrofoil-equipped boat given better riding qualities in rough water and will exceed by 50% or more the speed of conventional boats of the same size and with the same installed power.
