Background: Tight security surrounded a meeting between South Vietnam's President Thieu and his campaign managers in Saigon on Wednesday (25 August). At the meeting the President told them to continue with their preparations for South Vietnam's general election on October 3.
Vice-President Ky, who withdrew from the election on Monday (23 August) charging the President with fraud, did so too late to have his name withdrawn from the ballot list, according to Supreme Court officials. And Hau Nghia provincial manager R. Tran Van Ro quoted the President as saying during the meeting; "In the presidential election we have two candidates -- myself and Vice-President Nguyen Cao Ky."
President Thieu had earlier met the American Ambassador, Elsworth Bunker, who continued his efforts to find a compromise solution.
SYNOPSIS: Tight security was in force outside the Majestic Hotel in Saigon on Wednesday wh??? President Thieu met his campaign managers. He told them to continue with their preparations for South Vietnam;'s general elections on October the third. On Monday Vice-President Ky withdrew from the election charging the President with fraud. But Supreme Court officials have said that he did so too late to have his name withdrawn from the ballot. So according to President Thieu, he has an opponent in the elections.
Earlier in the day President Thieu had a meeting with the American Ambassador, Ellsworth Bunker. He continued his attempts to help the Vietnamese find a compromise solution which would make a contested election possible. Political tension was accented by an allied military announcement that they expected a new climax in Vietcong attacks in the next four days linked with the lower house parliamentary elections on Monday.
The third candidate in the presidential elections, former head of state General Duong Van Minh. withdrew last Friday, claiming, like Vice-President Ky, that there were irregularities in the election So far President Thieu has done nothing to counter these charges.
There has been growing opposition to President Thieu's handling of the election. On Thursday one anti-government candidate in the parliamentary elections was arrested -- with ten of his supporters -- for denouncing President Thieu.
