  • Description

UP TO NOW, THE ONLY HELICOPTER PILOTS IN THE IVORY COAST AIR FORCE HAVE BEEN FRENCHMEN SERVING UNDER FRANCE'S TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE SCHEME. NOW A GROUP OF LOCAL PILOTS ARE BEING TRAINED, AND BY THE END OF THE YEAR THE AIR FORCE WILL HAVE SIX FULLY TRAINED HELICOPTER PILOTS OF ITS OWN.

TWO OF THE LOCAL PILOTS UNDER FRENCH TRAINING HAVE ALREADY GRADUATED, AND ONE OF THEM IS SHOWN IN THIS FILM COMPLETING HIS COURSE. HELICOPTERS ARE VERY USEFUL IN SUCH COUNTRIES AS THE IVORY COAST, WHERE MUCH OF THE COUNTRY IS COVERED WITH THICK JUNGLE AND BUSH AND THERE ARE FEW LANDING STRIPS.

USES TO WHICH HELICOPTERS ARE PUT IN THE IVORY COAST INCLUDE KEEPING A WATCH ON THE MOVEMENT OF WILD ANIMALS AND BIG GAME, LIKE ELEPHANTS, AND SPOTTING POACHES IN THE GAME RESERVES.

IN COUNTRIES LIKE THE AFRICAN STATES, WHERE THERE ARE STILL A MINIMUM OF LANDING STRIPS, THE HELICOPTER COME INTO ITS OWN. THE IVORY COAST, FOR INSTANCE, HIGHLY VALUES ITS HELICOPTER FLEET. BUT AMONG THE THINGS THAT THE HIGHLY VERSATILE HELICOPTER CANNOT DO IS FLY ITSELF. AND THE IVORY COAST HAS SUFFERED A TOTAL LACK OF HELICOPTER PILOTS OF ITS OWN. THE ONLY HELICOPTER PILOTS IN THE IVORY COAST AIR FORCE HAVE BEEN FRENCHMEN SERVING UNDER FRANCE'S TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE SCHEME. BUT NOW, THIS SITUATION IS GRADUALLY CHANGING FOR THE BETTER.

THE FRENCH MEN PILOTS IN THE IVORY COAST ARE TRAINING LOCAL PILOTS TO REPLACE THEM. ALREADY TWO LOCAL PILOTS HAVE BEEN TRAINED AS MASTERS OF THE "WHIRLYBIRD" -- AS IT'S OFTEN CALLED -- AND IT'S EXPECTED THAT BY THE END OF THE YEAR THE IVORY COAST AIR FORCE WILL HAVE SIX FULLY TRAINED HELICOPTER PILOTS. THE TRAINEE SEEN HERE WAS FILMED IN THE FINAL STAGES OF HIS TRAINING. FLYING SOLO, HE PILOTS THE HELICOPTER IN AN PERFECT LIFT-OFF.

THE TRAINEE LITERALLY PASSED HIS FINAL TEST OF SKILL WITH FLYING COLOURS. A TESTIMONY TO BOTH HIS OWN CAPACITY TO HANDLE THE COMPLICATED MECHANISM OF THE MACHINE AND TO HIS INSTRUCTORS. HIS FELLOW AIR FORGE TRAINEES CONGRATULATED HIM AND SHOWED THEIR OWN PLEASURE IN HIS ACHIEVEMENT IN THE UNIVERSAL FASHION.

THE HELICOPTER IS UNDOUBTEDLY THE MOST VERSATILE OF FLYING MACHINES. IT CAN TAKE OFF AND LAND STRAIGHT UP AND DOWN -- ON A CLIFF EDGE. IF NECESSARY AND IF ITS ENGINE FAILS, THE FLAILING ROTOR BLADES WILL BRING IT DOWN TO A REASONABLY SOFT LANDING WITHOUT POWER. IT'S VERSATILITY HAS BEEN AMPLY DEMONSTRATED IN THE VIETNAM WAR, WHERE THE AMERICANS PUT I TO A VARIETY OF USES: LANDING TROOPS ON JUST ABOUT EVERY TYPE OF TERRAIN, PULING OUT WOUNDED MEN, SHUTTLING WEAPONS AND SUPPLIES TO AREAS INACCESSIBLE TO ANY OTHER TYPE OF VEHICLE AND AS A FIGHTING GUNSHIP FIRING MACHINE GUNS AND ROCKETS, AND EVEN DROPPING BOMBS IF NECESSARY.

THE IVORY COAST HAS MORE PEACEFUL PLANS FOR ITS OWN HELICOPTERS AND PILOTS. HOWEVER, IN ONE WAR AT LEAST, THEY'RE EXPECTED TO BE EQUALLY USEFUL: THE GOVERNMENT'S WAR ON POACHES IN THE BIG GAME RESERVES.
