Background: The mayor of West Berlin said today reunification of East and West Germany is possible, but depends on a detente between Russia and the United States and upon the eventual economic unification of all Europe.
Mayor Klaus Schutz, in New Orleans on a tour promoting American investment in West Berlin, said he does not foresee a quick reunification of the Germanies, but that it is possible......if Europe moves toward unity.
Schutz said reunification would not come from a bilateral decision between West the U.S. and Russia.
Schutz called the recent diplomatic exchange between West Germany and Communist Romania and Yugoslavia another step toward European cooperation.
He said he "would not be surprised" if the Bonn government established diplomatic relations with other East European countries in the near future.
Schutz, who served as number 2 man in the West German foreign office until he became Berlin mayor three months ago said his political party, the Social Democratic party, supports U.N. Secretary-general Thant's efforts for peace in Vietnam. Schutz said, "we pray for peace in Vietnam and Korea."
Asked about American investment in West Berlin, and the recent decision by President Johnson to restrict investment and tourism abroad, Schutz said he does not think it will hurt Berlin. American investors will more selective, the mayor said, and look for special situations. And he added that West Berlin has the special opportunities that will attract American investors.
Following his news conference, Schutz greeted Mayor Victory Schiro, and presented the city of Orleans statue of the "Berlin Bear" which will be placed in front of the International Trade ??? on the Mississippi river."
