  • Description

DR. KAMUZU BANDA, THE PRIME MINISTER OF MALAWI, ON FRIDAY, URGED RHODESIA'S AFRICAN LEADERS TO RENOUNCE VIOLENCE AND SABOTAGE AS A MEANS TO THEIR POLITICAL ENDS.

DR. BANDA WAS SPEAKING AT THE OPENING OF THE MALAWI CONGRESS PARTY'S ANNUAL POLITICAL STUDY CONFERENCE AT SOCHE HILL COLLEGE, SOCHE, BLANTYRE. THE CONFERENCE WAS ATTENDED BY FOUR AFRICAN MEMBERS OF THE RHODESIAN PARLIAMENT, INCLUDING MR. CHIPUNZA, LEADER OF THE UNITED PEOPLE'S PARTY, AND MR. GONDO, THE DEPUTY LEADER.

THE BEST WAY FOR RHODESIAN AFRICANS TO GAIN INDEPENDENCE WAS THROUGH CONSTITUTIONAL MEANS, SAID THE MALAWI PRIME MINISTER. HE URGED AFRICAN LEADERS IN THE ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY (O.A.U.) NOT TO BE ARROGANT AND THINK THEY WERE TALKING FOR THE AFRICAN IN RHODESIA.

AFRICAN LEADERS WHO PROPOSED VIOLENCE SHOULD BE DISREGARDED BY RHODESIAN AFRICANS, SAID DR. BANDA, AND HE SUGGESTED THAT THESE LEADERS WOULD BE UNABLE TO FINISH WHAT THEY HAD STARTED.

URGING POLITICAL DISCUSSION AND NEGOTIATION, DR. BANDA SAID VIOLENCE AGAINST THE WHITES WOULD LOSE FRIENDS IN BRITAIN, WHOSE FRIENDSHIP THE RHODESIAN AFRICANS NEEDED.
