Background: Showjumping, and Britain's Harvey Smith failed in his bid to break the 40-year-old British high jump record at the Olympia International Championships in London on Saturday (17 December). Riding a grey called Graf, he had two attempts at seven feet seven inches (2.31 metres), but the record of seven feet six and a quarter inches (2.29m) set by Donald Board on ???, in the same arena back in 1937, still stands.
SYNOPSIS: Before the Olympia Championships, Smith had been confident that Graf would break the record but during the earlier competitions the horse's jumping had been erratic....Graf made no mistake, though, at seven feet one and a quarter inches (2.16 metres).
Now came the shot at the record, the height going up to seven feet seven (2.31 metres).
Could Graf do it?....Smith brought him in confidently, but it was too much for the grey, and the poles fell.
The second attempt...and this time Graf decided it was too big, and refused.
Smith decided against a third attempt, leaving the 40-year-old record safe for the time being.
There was no record for Graf this time but Smith is determined man, and will doubtless try again. He has had his sights on Donald Beard's record for a long time, and he has a lot of faith in Graf's jumping ability.
