  • Description

PRESIDENT MAKARIOS OF CYPRUS YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) PROMISED TO ALLOW ADEQUATE SUPPLIES OF FOOD TO BE SENT TO THE TURKISH-CYPRIOTS IN THE VILLAGE OF KOKKINA, ON THE COAST OF NORTH-WEST CYPRUS.

HE TOLD THE COMMANDER OF THE UNITED NATIONS FORCE IN CYPRUS, GENERAL KODENDERA THIMAYYA, THAT THE GOVERNMENT WOULD PAY FOR THE SUPPLIES IF THE TURKISH-CYPRIOTS COULD NOT.

GENERAL THIMAYYA VISITED KOKKINA YESTERDAY TO INVESTIGATE CONDITIONS THERE FOLLOWING TURKEY'S WARNING THAT IT WOULD SEND FOOD SUPPLIES BY SHIP IF THE GREEK CYPRIOT ECONOMIC RESTRICTIONS ON THE VILLAGE DID NOT EASE.

THE GENERAL, WHO IS INDIAN, ARRIVED AT KOKKINA BY HELICOPTER AND SPENT THREE HOURS THERE. AFTER MEETING LOCAL TURKISH-CYPRIOT LEADERS AND INSPECTING LIVING CONDITIONS, HE TOLD REPORTERS THAT FOOD SUPPLIES WERE BELOW NORMAL, THAT LIVING STANDARDS WERE SUBHUMAN, AND THAT HE FEARED EPIDEMICS.

IN OLD ROMAN CAVES ON THE MOUNTAIN SLOPES ABOVE KOKKINA WHERE REFUGEES ARE ACCOMMODATED, THE GENERAL HELD CRYING BABIES DRESSED IN RAGS. AT A MOSQUE CONVERTED INTO A DINING ROOM HE INSPECTED AND TASTED THE FOOD AVAILABLE.

GENERAL THIMAYYA SAID HE HAD BEEN TOLD THAT KOKKINA NEEDED THREE TONS OF FOOD DAILY, BUT IT HAD RECEIVED ONLY TWO AND A HALF TONS FROM THE CYPRUS GOVERNMENT OR THE RED CROSS SINCE THE 19TH OF LAST MONTH.

HE SAID THAT 600 PEOPLE WERE LIVING IN THE CAVES AND THAT, WITH WINTER APPROACHING, EPIDEMICS MIGHT BREAK OUT. THE GENERAL SAID HE WOULD CHECK THE FIGURES ON HOW MANY PEOPLE WERE IN KOKKINA. THE TURKISH SAY THERE ARE UP TO 1,500, BUT THE GREEKS DISPUTE THAT THERE ARE THIS MANY.

THE GENERAL ESTIMATED THAT THERE WERE ONLY FOUR DAY'S RATIONS LEFT IN THE VILLAGE, EVEN AT THE CURRENT RATIONS LEFT IN THE VILLAGE, EVEN AT THE CURRENT RATION LEVEL. AFTER HIS VISIT, HE LEFT TO REPORT HIS FINDINGS TO PRESIDENT MAKARIOS.
