• Short Summary

Mauritanian President Moktar Ould Daddah, this year's President of the Organisation of African Unity (O.A.U.),?

  • Description

Mauritanian President Moktar Ould Daddah, this year's President of the Organisation of African Unity (O.A.U.), flew into Algiers on Thursday (April 27) and said he hoped Heads of State would renew their support for African liberation movements at the OAU's summit conference in Rabat in June.

The Mauritanian President arrived from Tokyo (via Paris) where he spent four days explaining the organisation's attitude of South Africa and Rhodesia to Japanese leaders.

In February, the O.A.U. adopted a resolution condemning Britain for Herr persistent use of the veto over Rhodesia in the United Nations Security Council and reaffirmed its opinion that the "grave situation in Southern Rhodesia constitutes a threat to international peace and security."
The resolution also called on the Security Council to widen the scope of sanctions imposed on Rhodesia and South Africa -- as well as "all those government which have blatantly refused to carry out the mandatory decisions of the Security Council."
The Council also recommended that the O.A.U. summit in Rabat consider measures necessary for the liberation of Rhodesia.

The Mauritanian leader was due to leave Algeria today (April 28).
