    A former Tanzanian Government minister was released on Wednesday (26 April) after spending six years in prison on charges of plotting has assassination of Zanzibar Head of State, Sheikh Abeid Karume. The former minister, Mr. Abdul Rahman Babu, was one of 13 detainees who were freed on pardon by Tanzanian President, Julius Nyerere in an amnesty to mark the 14th anniversary of the union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar. After his release Mr. Babu strenuously denied any involvement in the assassination, and said the believed an army lieutenant. Humud Mohamed, carried out the shooting to avenge his father's death. Mr. Babu said he learnt of his release only half an hour before he was freed.

    SYNOPSIS: Fifty-four-year-old Mr. Babu was the Tanzanian Minister of Economic Planning and Development until he was dismissed from the cabinet shortly before his detention in 1972. The day after his release he spoke to newsmen.
