    Background: ROME, ITALY

Andres Gomez of Ecuador won the Italian Open Championship on May 20 for the second time in three years, when he beat 16-year-old Aaron Krickstein of the United States 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2. After Krickstein won the first set, he looked on course to become the youngest player to win the title, but Gomez soon took control of the game, to win the 40,000 dollar event. Gomez, who ranks eight in the world, went on to serve impeccably and never allowed his opponent to make full use of his powerful forehand. The weather conditions made playing difficult, with a strong wind throwing dust and clay into the players' eyes for much of the match. Gomez who was seeded fifth won the title in1982. He was the only seeded player in the championships to play consistently throughout the week. After the match Gomez said this year's victory was more satisfying than when he first won the title.
