  • Description

In Bangkok over the weekend, Thai people proudly showed off their country's most beautiful girls in the annual Miss Thailand contest.

A large crowd of locals and tourists assembled to watch the event, one of the most popular crowd-pullers in the country.

The girls were first paraded in their national costumes and later in bathing suits which had been the cause of some consternation before the contest began -- under Thai law, backless dresses are forbidden in public. For the beauty contest however, officials and government officers arranged a compromise.

Girl-watching experts pronounced this year's contest as being the best over, with contestants from all parts of the country being represented.

Traditionally, the runners-up were announced to the crowd first. In second place was Saeng-arun Jitchai, and Sudshaleo Rodbundham took third place in the official listings.

The winner was twenty-year-old Kanok-on Boonma -- a grocer's daughter from the district of Chachoengsao. She won by a clear margin in a decision which was popular with the crowd.

It was the twenty-first Miss Thailand contest, and the organisers are predicting an even more successful event for 1973.
