  • Description

THERE HAS BEEN MORE SHOOTING IN CYPRUS TODAY (FRIDAY) BUT NOT ON THE SCALE OF YESTERDAY'S OUTBREAK IN AND AROUND THE TURKISH VILLAGE OF AYIOS SOZEMENOS, 16 MILES FROM NICOSIA. ELEVEN PEOPLE - SIX OF THEM GREEK CYPRIOTS - WERE KILLED AND AN UNKNOWN NUMBER WOUNDED.

THE TROUBLE IS REPORTED TO HAVE STARTED WHEN A GREEK LAND ROVER, ON ITS WAY TO TURN ON WATER TAPS IN THE VILLAGE, RAN INTO AN AMBUSH. THE NEWS SPREAD AND ABOUT 60 GREEK CYPRIOTS, INCLUDING POLICE, SOLDIERS AND IRREGULARS ADVANCED ON THE VILLAGE, FIRING WITH AUTOMATIC WEAPONS AND SYSTEMATICALLY SETTING FIRE TO HOUSES. BRITISH FORCES ARRIVED AND AFTER SOME TIME MANAGED TO GET THE GREEKS TO LEAVE THE VILLAGE, WHILE THEY WENT AHEAD WITH EVACUATION OF CASUALTIES BY HELICOPTER.

(TODAY (FRIDAY) TURKISH CYPRIOTS SOURCES RELEASED THE TEXT OF A TELEGRAM SENT BY THEIR LEADER, DR KUTCHUK TO THE INTERNATIONAL PRESS INSTITUTE IN ZURICH. DR KUTCHUK CLAIMS THAT THE AMBUSH STORY WAS MERELY A PRETEXT FOR A GREEK PLAN TO ATTACK THE VILLAGE AND EXTERMINATE THE TURKISH COMMUNITY.)
(TODAY ALSO BROUGHT INTERVENTION BY MR KHRUSHCHEV IN THE CYPRUS CRISIS. IN MESSAGES TO PRESIDENT JOHNSON, SIR ALEC DOUGLAS-HOME, AND THE FRENCH, GREEK AND TURKISH GOVERNMENTS, HE SAID RUSSIA COULD NOT REMAIN INDIFFERENT TO THE SITUATION IN THE MEDITERRANEAN. APPARENTLY REFERRING TO PLANS TO SEND A NATO FORCE TO CYPRUS, HE URGED ALL INTERESTED STATES "TO TAKE EVERY ACCOUNT OF THE CONSEQUENCES WHICH MAY BE ENTAILED BY ARMED INVASION.")
