  • Description

STUDENTS IN TOKYO YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) CONTINUED THEIR DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST UNITED STATES POLICY IN VIETNAM.

MORE THAN ONE-THOUSAND STUDENTS TOOK PART IN THE DEMONSTRATION. THE DEMONSTRATION ALSO COMMEMORATED THE FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE STUDENTS' DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST THE SIGNING OF THE AMERICAN-JAPANESE MUTUAL AID TREATY. THE 1960 DEMONSTRATIONS, IN WHICH 100,000 STUDENTS TOOK PART, ALSO LED FORMER AMERICAN PRESIDENT, GENERAL EISENHOWER TO CANCEL HIS VISIT TO JAPAN.

DEMONSTRATORS ATTEMPTED TO LAY A WREATH ON THE SPOT WHERE AN 18-YEAR-OLD GIRL STUDENT DIED OUTSIDE THE DIET (PARLIAMENT) BUILDING DURING THE 1960 DEMONSTRATIONS BUT POLICE CHASED THEM OFF.

AS WELL AS PROTESTING AGAINST WHAT THEY CALLED THE US IMPERIALISTS IN VIETNAM, THE STUDENTS, AT A MEETING AFTER THE DEMONSTRATION, DEMANDED A HALT IN THE NEGOTIATIONS OF THE US-KOREA TREATY, DUE TO BE CONCLUDED NEXT WEEK (JUNE 22).

DEMONSTRATIONS LIKE THIS CONSIDERABLY HAMPER TRAFFIC IN TOKYO AND CAUSE HUGE JAMS. WITH 1,500 POLICEMEN OUT ON DUTY, THE STUDENTS WERE KEPT ON THE MOVE, BUT FOUR WHO RESISTED WERE HAULED AWAY TO WAITING POLICE VANS - ON CHARGES OF VIOLATING THE CITY'S TRAFFIC REGULATIONS.
