  • Description

ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL STALLS IN SAIGON IS RUN BY THE YOUNG ARTIST LE-HONG, WHO HAS FOUND AN EXPANDING MARKET FOR HER PAINTINGS AMONG THE MANY FOREIGNERS, BOTH CIVILIAN AND MILITARY, BROUGHT TO SOUTH VIETNAM BY THE WAR.

LE-HONG'S STYLE IS TYPICALLY VIETNAMESE - SHE HAS A FLAIR FOR BRILLIANT COLOURING, ORIGINALITY OF TECHNIQUE AND AN ABILITY TO WORK AT HIGH SPEED.

FOR THE FIRST THREE-AND-HALF WEEKS OF EACH MONTH SHE SELLS PAINTINGS FROM A SMALL STALL IN THE CENTRE OF SAIGON MARKET. THE BULK OF HER CUSTOMERS ARE AMERICAN SERVICEMEN, WHO ARE PAID AT THE BEGINNING OF THE MONTH.

THE LAST FOUR OR FIVE DAYS OF THE MONTH LE-HONG SPENDS AT HOME MAKING THE PAINTING FOR HER NEXT MONTH'S STOCK. MOST OF THEM ARE DONE ON SILK. LE-HONG WILL LAY DOWN THE MAIN OUTLINES OF EACH PAINTING, AND THEN HER SMALL SISTERS HELP WITH THE 'FILLING-IN'. THE PAINTINGS SELL FOR BETWEEN FOUR AND EIGHT SHILLINGS (STERLING).

HER STALL ITSELF IS PACKED AT NIGHT INTO A SMALL WOODEN CASE WHICH SHE CAN LOCK AND LEAVE WITH A NEARBY SHOP OWNER. HER OLDER BROTHER, LE-DANH, COLLECTS HER DAILY FROM WORK ON HIS MOTOR SCOOTER.

LE-HONG, WHO IS 19, HAD ONLY ELEMENTARY ART LESSONS AT JUNIOR SCHOOL AND NO SPECIALISED TRAINING.
