  • Description

IN SOUTH VIETNAM, AMERICAN TROOPS TAKING PART IN THE BIGGEST OFFENSIVE OF THE CONFLICT SO FAR CLAIM THEY'VE KILLED 49 VIET CONG IN THE FIRST THREE DAYS OF THE OPERATION. TWENTY-FIVE-THOUSAND AMERICAN COMBAT TROOPS ARE TAKING PART IN THE OPERATION, CODE-NAMED "JUNCTION CITY", IN THE SO-CALLED WAR ZONE C, CLOSE TO THE CAMBODIAN BORDER.

ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE OPERATION, 70 HELICOPTERS HEADED FOR LANDING ZONES CLOSE TO THE CAMBODIAN BORDER, WHERE THE VIET CONG NINTH DIVISION IS BELIEVED TO BE HIDDEN.SOME OF THE DESIGNATED LANDING ZONES WERE LESS THAN 2,000 YARDS (METRES) FROM THE BORDER. AT FIRST THE TROOPS WERE UNOPPOSED, BUT SOME MET SNIPER FIRE.

ARTILLERY TAKING PART IN THE OPERATION INCLUDES 105MM HOWITZERS. AIR FORCE PILOTS HAVE PROVIDED IMMEDIATE AND ALMOST CONSTANT SUPPORT TO THE TROOPS. IN THE DENSE JUNGLE, WHERE THE SOLDIERS CAN SEE ONLY A FEW YARDS. THE JET AIRCRAFT HAVE PROVED THE BEST WEAPONS.

SOLDIERS FROM THE 11TH ARMOURED CAVALRY REGIMENT AND FROM THE AMERICAN 25TH DIVISION WERE GIVEN THE MISSION TO HEAD FOR THE REPUTED HEART OF THE VIET CONG HIGH COMMAND, NOT ONLY FOR WAR ZONE C, BUT FOR ALL OF SOUTH VIETNAM. IT IS THOUGHT TO BE ABOUT 10 MILES INTO THE JUNGLE.

TENS OF THOUSANDS OF AMERICAN TROOPS ARE ALREADY DEPLOYED IN POSITIONS ALONG THE CAMBODIAN BORDER. THE IDEA IS FOR THE ADVANCING COLUMNS TO PUSH THE VIET CONG TOWARDS THE GROUND POSITIONS.

A SHORT EXCHANGE OF FIRE TOOK PLACE ON THE SECOND DAY BETWEEN SNIPERS AND THE ADVANCING PERSONNEL CARRIERS. VIET CONG MINES HAVE HELD UP THE ADVANCE, AND THIS COLUMN MOVED ONLY 2,500 YARDS (METRE) ON THE SECOND DAY BECAUSE OF THEM.

ALSO IN THE AREA IS THOUGHT TO BE THE VIET CONG'S "LIBERATION RADIO" STATION, WHICH HAS BROADCAST FOR ALMOST SIX YEAR AND HAS BEEN CONSTANTLY MOVED.
