  • Description

On February 16th the Chief of staff of the Pakistan army, General Abdul Hamid Khan, opened the new Karakoram Highway, built by the Pakistan army with Chinese assistance and running through extremely difficult mountain terrain 200 miles (320 km) from Gilgit, in North Pakistan, to the border of the People's Republic of China.

The road, begun in 1966, is the second between Pakistan and China, but the first ever to carry heavy vehicles.

This official Pakistani film shows the opening ceremony at Baltit, on the northern tip of West Pakistan bordering the Chinese region of Sinkiang, about 100 miles (160 kms) from the Chinese border.

Chinese Minister of Communications Mr. Yang Chieh attended, and affirmed China's support at the ceremony for Kashmir's right to self-determination. His remarks gain significance in the light of current strained relations between Pakistan and India following the hijacking of an Indian airliner to Pakistan by Kashmiri rebels.
