  • Description

More than fifty thousand trade unionists marched through the streets of Reggio Calabria, in southern Italy, on Sunday (October 22) to lend weight to demands for more government assistance for the impoverished south.

An estimated ten thousand riot police and carabiniere patrolled the city and tried to prevent clashes between the marchers and stone-throwing rightist youths. Fifteen marchers were reported hurt.

The march came at the end of a three-day meeting in Reggio Calabria by trade union leaders from throughout Italy to discuss development problems in the south. During the meeting tension grew between trade union supporters and members of right-wing political groups.

Five people were injured on Saturday night (21 October) when a bomb exploded under a train carrying workers from Bologna to take part in the Reggio Calabria march. There were eight other bomb explosions on the eve of the march.

Two years ago the city was the scene of street battles between left and right-wing rivals over whether Reggio or Catanzaro should be the capital of the newly set up Calabria administrative region.
