    MR JOSHUA NKOMO, AFRICAN NATIONALIST LEADER IN SOUTHERN RHODESIA. YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) WAS SENTENCED TO SIX MONTHS IMPRISONMENT, WITH HALF OF THE SENTENCE SUSPENDED. A COURT IN UMTALI FOUND HIM GUILTY OF TRYING TO EXPOSE THE POLICE TO CONTEMPT AND RIDICULE.

    THE PROSECUTION SAID MR NKOMO HAD MADE A SPEECH REFERRING TO MASS ARRESTS AND ACCUSING. THE POLICE OF TORTURING AND ILL-TREATING PEOPLE. THREE MONTHS OF HIS SENTENCE WAS SUSPENDED ON CONDITION HE IS NOT CONVICTED UNDER THE SAME LAW WITHIN THE NEXT THREE YEARS.

    GRANTED BAIL OF GBP100 PENDING APPEAL, MR NKOMO WAS ORDERED TO SURRENDER HIS TRAVEL DOCUMENTS. HE WAS TOLD HE COULD NOT LEAVE THE COUNTRY WITHOUT THE COURT'S PERMISSION.

    POLICE WITH RIOT GUNS AND DOGS GUARDED THE COURT AFTER CLEARING AFRICANS FROM THE SURROUNDING AREA. LATER, AFTER THE NATIONALIST LEADER HAD EMERGED FROM THE HEARING, TWO TEAR-GAS SHELLS WERE FIRED ABOVE A CROWD THAT REFUSED TO DISPERSE. THOUGH ARRIVING IN A CAR, MR NKOMO HAD TO WALK SEVERAL MILES BACK TO HIS HOME: HIS CAR BEING IMPOUNDED BY THE POLICE.
