More than five thousand workers turned out in Tokyo for the annual Mayday demonstration. The demonstration and rally was held at the Yoyogi Park.
The festive mood of the rally reflected the successful conclusion of this year's labour offensive.
Speakers at the rally told the huge crowd that the latest negotiations had succeeded in preventing a decline in the real purchasing power of wages for the third year in a row. However, they expressed concern over unemployment among Japanese fishermen following the establishment of a two hundred mile fishing zone by various countries including the neighbouring Soviet Union and the United States of America.
Later the demonstrators marched to downtown areas of the city. Large numbers of police kept a watchful eye on the demonstration but made no moves to interrupt the May celebration.
A large number of politicians were amongst the marchers. The politicians were campaigning for the forthcoming Japanese elections.
