    AT LEAST TEN PEOPLE WERE KILLED, 30 INJURED, AND THOUSANDS LEFT HOMELESS WHEN AN EIGHT FOOT HIGH (2.5 METRE) WALL OF WATER SWEPT THROUGH SOUTHERN KUALA LUMPUR YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) AFTER A DAM BROKE FOLLOWING HEAVY RAIN.THE EARTH DAM HAD CONTAINED A LAKE HALF A MILE (800 METRES) LONG AND UP TO 20 FEET (6 METRES) DEEP.

    WHEN THE DAM BROKE, SHORTLY AFTER MIDDAY, A TORRENT OF WATER AND MUD RUSHED ACROSS THE MAIN ROAD AND SMASHED INTO HOUSES.IT SWEPT AWAY 50 PALM THATCHED SQUATTERS HUTS, HURLED PARKED CARS AGAINST WALLS OF NEWLY BUILT CONCRETE FLATS, AND DROWNED VAST NUMBERS OF DOMESTIC LIVESTOCK.

    POLICE AND RESCUE WORKERS RUSHING TO THE DISASTER FOUND THEIR WAY BLOCKED BY HUGE TRAFFIC JAMS AND SURGING CROWDS, MANY OF THEM SEEKING RELATIVES LOST IN THE FLOOD.RIOT POLICE WERE CALLED IN TO CONTROL THEM.

    THE FLOOD WATERS CUT ALL DIRECT ROAD AND RAIL COMMUNICATIONS BETWEEN THE CAPITAL AND SOUTHERN MALAYA.SEVERAL MILES OF RAILWAY TRACK WERE SEVERELY DAMAGED.THE AIRPORT TOO, WAS SUBMERGED BY THE FLOOD AND LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS HAD TO BE CANCELLED.

    A POLICE COMMUNIQUE ISSUED YESTERDAY SAID THE DAM BELONGED TO THE PACIFIC TIN CONSOLIDATED, A CHINESE MINING COMPANY WHICH OPERATES ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF THE CAPITAL.THERE IS TO BE A FULL INQUIRY.

    THE DAMAGE IS ESTIMATED AT SEVERAL MILLION MALAYSIAN DOLLARS.THE GOVERNMENT HAVE LAUNCHED A PUBLIC APPEAL FOR FUNDS TO RELIEVE THE VICTIMS.
