  • Description

JUST NINE MONTHS SINCE THE CONSTITUTIONAL CRISIS THAT THREATENED NIGERIAN UNITY, THE COUNTRY IS FACED WITH A CRUCIAL ELECTION IN WESTERN NIGERIA WHERE SIX MILLION VOTERS GO TO THE POLLS ON MONDAY.

SINCE THE WESTERN NIGERIA HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY AND HOUSE OF CHIEFS WERE DISSOLVED LAST MONTH, ALL PUBLIC MEETINGS AND PROCESSIONS HAVE BEEN BANNED TILL AFTER THE ELECTION IN AN EFFORT TO PREVENT VIOLENCE BETWEEN THE TWO PARTIES.BUT POLICE REINFORCEMENTS HAVE ALSO BEEN MOVED INTO STRATEGIC POINTS IN THE REGION.

THE ELECTIONS WILL BE FIERCELY CONTESTED BY NIGERIA'S TWO MAIN POLITICAL GROUPS.THE NIGERIAN NATIONAL ALLIANCE (N.N.A.) AND THE UNITED PROGRESSIVE GRAND ALLIANCE (U.P.G.A.).

THE LAST ELECTION IN THE REGION TOOK PLACE IN AUGUST 1960, AND THEN THE ACTION GROUP, NOW ONE OF THE PARTIES WHICH FORMS THE NIGERIAN NATIONAL ALLIANCE, WON WITH AN OVERWHELMING MAJORITY.BUT SINCE THEN CONDITIONS HAVE CHANGED GREATLY BECAUSE OF SEVERAL FACTORS, PARTICULARLY THE RECENT SLUMP IN THE WORLD PRICE OF COCOA WHICH IS THE REGION'S MAIN ECONOMIC CROP.THE DISCONTENT FELT AMONG THE MASS OF THE PEOPLE COULD SWING THE BALANCE IN THE FAVOUR OF THE UNITED PROGRESSIVE GRAND ALLIANCE.
